Driving to pick up Faith from school, I reflect on what's happened the past few weeks, even years. Watching my twin sister have to give up a child, my parents both passing away, throwing myself into Gretchen, our relationship ending after so many years, meeting Gwendolyn, finding out about Sadie, living together as a family, marrying her...my head is spinning.

I put the car in park in front of the school and I see Faith wave to someone and look my way. I get out, walk around to the passenger side and open the door for her, opening my arms for a hug.

“How’s my favorite girl today?”

“Third favorite. I heard about you getting married.”

She laughs, wrapping me in a hug and I shake my head, letting her slide into the car. I close the door, walk back around and get in, starting it.

“All the women in my life are tied for my favorite, Faith. Don’t think because I married Gwen and have Sadie that you get dropped, okay? Our Friday afternoon Uncle/niece dates are still going to be a thing until you tell me otherwise. I’ll fight you on it though, just warning you.”

She laughs, rolling her bright blue eyes that match my own as she throws her head forward, putting her blonde hair into a knot on the top of her head.

“So why did you marry her?”

I sigh, driving us to our traditional lunch spot.

“It’s complicated.”

“Good thing I’m smart. Let’s hear it, Uncle Eli.”

She leans back in her seat, moving her hand to give me permission to dish it all out.

“Well her grandmother is sick and in order to go back home to see her, she has to be married. Her parents don’t approve of her having a baby before marriage. They’re a little different than us.”

“Well that’s really stupid of her parents but really awesome of you. Are you going to stay married to her forever?”

I hate having this conversation with her. I want her to know marriage is serious and to marry someone that will love her, which is the opposite of what I did with Gwen...right?

“I’m not sure. Listen, my situation is different. I care for Gwendolyn. She’s Sadie’s mother and…well...”

“Uncle Eli, I’m going be honest with you. By the look on your face, I have a feeling I’ll like her more than Gretchen. I mean, she’s fun, right?”

“Yeah, she’s fun…”

“She makes you happy?”

“I mean...sure, yeah she does.”

“You think she’s pretty?”

“Beautiful. Where are you going with this, Faith?”

“Sounds like a good wife to me. Why would you go looking for something else when you got the perfect thing already?”

I laugh, shaking my head as we pull into our favorite sushi joint.

“”It’s...a little more complicated than that.”

She shrugs, unbuckling her seatbelt.

“Whatever you say, Uncle Eli, you’re the adult, right? Just...from where I’m sitting, you adults seem to make things more complicated than it has to be. A lot of miscommunication is what causes problems.”

Her voice gets quiet at the end and I can’t help but wonder if she’s talking about Val and Declan.
